Kamchatka, Russia | Where the Salmon Rule, National Geographic Magazine: Stellar Sea Eagles | Kamchatka, Russia

The Kurilskoe Lake preserve is the gem of the Russian preserve system. These are called Stellar sea eagles in the U.S. and white-shouldered eagles in Russia, also nicknamed “parrots.” They are one of the 137 species that depend solely on salmon for protein. Eagles can eat well into winter. Salmon carcasses frozen near the surface of very shallow streams make frozen “TV dinners” for this and other species.
