Frederick Law Olmsted | A Passion for Parks, National Geographic: Drum Beats In Prospect Park

Gathering of African American men playing instruments and drums outside in a woods.

Drummers have gathered informally in a corner of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park every Sunday afternoon since 1968 with a mix of dancers, musicians, and others who listen and participate in the celebratory atmosphere.

Park designer Frederick Law Olmsted did not envision Drummers Grove in the 1860s when he and Calvert Vaux planned an urban space of meadows, woodlands, and pastoral views to help people connect with nature.
