Kamchatka, Russia | Where the Salmon Rule, National Geographic Magazine: Koryak-Russian Wedding | Khailino, Kamchatka Russia

The bride waits for her mother to come do her hair and put on her make-up. She is hoping most of her pregnancy will be covered up by the flowing wedding dress. The town had not had an event because they had been too busy just trying to survive and Koryak people don’t believe in weddings—they just live together. The bride is one-half indigenous Koryak and one-half Russian.  The groom is a white Russian. A traditional Russian ceremony has fake brides and the groom has to come to the bride’s house and choose between three doors.  One had an elderly woman hiding in a bedroom with a wedding veil. The other room was a bathroom and had a guy in a white wedding dress, and the bride was behind door number three.
